The Art of Resistance
Controversial Premier of the film at the Guelph International Film festival, Canada
The presentation of The Art of Resistance stirred up controversy, with accusations that it contained images that believers would find offensive, that it was anti-Catholic. Some local residents even demanded that the screening be cancelled. They organized a candlelight vigil during the screening, and tussled with municipal authorities. The source of the indignation was a photo of an installation by the 85-year-old artist León Ferrari. It presented Christ crucified on an American fighter plane and was displayed on the festival website. The trailer for the film included other works by Ferrari that also caused a stir. His controversial piece, which was made in 1965 as a symbolic protest against the war in Vietnam, is entitled Western – Christian Civilization.
The documentary recounts the scandal surrounding the Ferrari retrospective Recoleta in Buenos Aires. Catholic militants vandalized the exhibit and the Church, a key player in Argentine politics, succeeded in having the show closed down for a few weeks. Some citizens in Guelph demanded that the film be censored – a film that deals with the transformative and expressive power of art in the streets, in the slums and in psychiatric hospitals. The documentary The Art of Resistance plunges the viewer into the intense world of artists and art collectives that use art as a tool for social criticism, extraordinary expression and community participation. Festival programmer Danielle Dyson actively supported the film and went ahead with the screening
